Iplanet is a solution to the management of organic wastes at home. It is a website in which you will find information about how to make your own products with elements that you can find in your home to make use of the organic waste.

The result of the design process is a prototype of the web page that is located in this link:

The web page is composed for 5 parts:

Home: where you see a video (see at the right side) that has the function of showing in a friendly way what the problem of the organic waste is.

Instruction Manuals: This section allows you to search in a database of manuals arranged according to the stages of the composting process.

Wiki: Information about the process of composting.

About: What is the project and a presentation of the stages of design.

Shop: You can buy some of the existing instructives already built.

Some of the most relevant data that impulsed us to develop this project was:

0.48Kg of waste produced by person daily.
Between 55% -70% of the volume of the entire waste is organic.
In our city (Medellín-Colombia) it represents 236-295 Ton/monthly in CO2 equivalent due to travel to the landfill

As result of our initial investigation, we found out that the problem of the organic waste management had two principal causes:

- Misinformation.

-Deficient managment.

The metodology used in the project consisted of 3 steps:

Research: User profile and complementary data.

Create: Product design.

Deliver: Make it public.

Through the design process we considered many different ideas and evaluated them in terms of funcionality, feasibility, sustainability and innovation. Most of the product ideas failed because they involved more production processes and more waste of raw materials, and they don't help to diminish the misinformation problem, about how the organic waste impacts the planet and that we don´t have unlimited resources.

The webpage Iplanet tries to give information about how people can reuse their waste, in a way that we can close the cycle of the organic waste and extend the lifespan of other products such as Coke bottles and plastic bags.

Smart Grabable Pack

Although it was not a winner idea (16th Place) at the Smart sausage contest placed in Jovoto's web site, I think it is a good design.

Its a package that allows the user to grab either one or the whole package of sausages. Some of the advantages are: easy to manage, easy to stack, encouraging the user to grab more, easy to transport, easy to open, produce as many as you want, display according to your needs.

The Contest Briefing and idea description

Develop an innovative new packaging for the Gutfried poultry sausage.

Background Info

The company

The company name “Gutfried” originates from the place name “Gut Friedrichsruh” in Steinhagen, Westfalen in Germany. The company, which was founded in 1924 in Versmold, was purchased in 1932 by Heinrich Nölke & Co. KG. The family business started off by rearing pigs, followed later by poultry. This farm, which has existed for centuries, served as the foundation for an agricultural business that was soon to become a leader in the food production sector and which still enjoys an excellent reputation to this day.

The Gutfried brand

In the mid-fifties Heinrich Nölke recognized that there was a large gap in the market for poultry suppliers in Germany. The company began concentrating on this market niche and launched poultry sausage in Germany for the first time in 1968. Nölke used the rapid market success to invest in one brand item early on: with “Gutfried” the first poultry sausage brand was born in 1971. To make it stand out from traditional sausage at supermarket service counters it was given an orange-colored casing.

The national launch of the Gutfried brand was supported by advertising from the outset – initially with a print campaign in women’s magazines and since 1972 with TV advertisements. This made Gutfried the first sausage brand to advertise on television.

In 1977 Gutfried was awarded the “Goldener Zuckerhut” (“Golden Sugar Loaf”) prize for future-oriented marketing in the German food industry. The well-known slogan “Gutfried ist gut für mich” (“Gutfried is good for me”) was developed at the end of the eighties and has accompanied the brand ever since. Since 2004 the well-known German TV host and enthusiastic cook Johannes B. Kerner and his wife Britta Becker have represented Gutfried in front of the camera as two public figures and brand ambassadors.

As the company has continuously invested in advertising and brand management since the early days, today Gutfried is the most popular poultry sausage in Germany and stands for a modern, conscious diet and excellent quality. The wide assortment of poultry sausage, cold cuts and snacks appeals to consumers with its reduced fat content and is therefore ideal for a modern diet.

The Gutfried poultry sausage

The poultry luncheon meat sausage is a key item in the brand’s assortment. Its characteristic shape – the so-called “½ ring” – is unmistakable. The variations of ½ ring (400g) and ½ ring clipped in the middle (350g) are currently available. The poultry sausage itself is protected by the orange-colored sterile casing. The sausage is also vacuum packed in a combination of upper and lower wrapping.

Aim:

An innovative packaging design for the poultry sausage should now be created in order to differentiate from the competitors (brands like Wiesenhof and Herta, but in particular also brand name labels like Dulano, Gut&Günstig etc.), to underline the innovation leadership and to justify the pricing.

The new packaging should be innovative, modern, high quality, visually appealing, attention-grabbing and practical.

Task Definition

Develop an innovative new packaging design for the Gutfried poultry sausage.

Your new packaging concept should only be for the outer packaging of the product and should replace the previous packaging, a combination of upper and lower wrapping.

Here Gutfried is looking for a brand new type of packaging: you can use all

packaging materials and try out new shapes. We are not, however, looking for a new graphic redesign of the product packaging in this contest.

Essentially, the typical shape of the poultry sausage itself - the ½ ring – should stay the same. Ideas for a modified packaging form, especially in view of improved portioning (such as division into smaller portions for example) are welcome.

You should also take the following aspects into consideration when designing your new packaging:

Convenience: your packaging should be simple to handle and easy to open.

Sustainability: we welcome the use of new, environmentally-friendly and resource-saving packaging materials.

The re-packaging should not result in “over packaging” of the product, i.e. no more packaging material should be used than necessary.

Mandatory Requirements

The sausage must retain its recognition value, i.e. the familiar shape typical for this type of goods - the ½ ring – should not be changed.

The orange-colored sterile casing and its design should not be changed.

This contest is not about the graphic design of the packaging, but about finding new types of packaging and materials.

The poultry sausage is 28cm long with a diameter of 4.5cm.

X2 Beer Mix Label

X2 is a Beer mix label, awarded with the 12th place at the Triple x² Label ReDesign of the company Licher, which was made in Jovoto's website.

Task Definition

Design a new label for the Licher x² product range!

Licher is hoping to receive creative and fresh ideas for an independent and confident design of labels for the x² product range. Since 2001 only minor alterations have been made to the labels so the current design is no longer contemporary. The labels are due for a complete overhaul.

Regarding the new design you should take the following points into consideration:

The redesign should convey more appetite appeal and contribute towards a more emotional and less static image.

Your redesign should convey the idea of the individual flavors more than the current labels do.

The impact of the x² brand should also be heightened by a clearer layout of “x” and “²”.

The Licher lettering should be retained on the label to show where the beer comes from, but the focus is clearly on the depiction of the x² brand.

Your submission should include design ideas for all three flavors: Licher x2 Cola, Licher x2 Fresh Lemon and Licher x2 Energy.

Siproc (protection system of falling persons and objects) is a system developed by C.a.s.a company to
prevent damages caused by falling objects and workers in the building construction.

The main work was to create an animation to demostrate an explain how siproc works, including its assembly and the different configuration.

Perfect Pitch Trainer Challenge

PP is a portable catcher, awarded with the 12th place at the Perfect Pitch Trainer Challenge of the company SKLZ, which was made in Jovoto's website. It is based in one tube that determine its size. The whole system is based in the same piece and is fully disassemblable to fit a bag.

Adding the flexibility of a full or semi- desassembling of the product, depending of the use and the space avaliable in the house.

Fully disassembled and ready to go package

Each one of its arms can rotate from its joint to the base, and their rotation angle is determined by pins set in its joint by the user.

Being one-based piece and having the same joining system make it possible to expand it with more parts. By disassembling both arms, PP will be completely flat and easy to store in case the user doesn't want to fully disarm it.

When PP is opened to its maximum width, it is perfect for small children since it is not too high and allows a superior catching area. PP can also be set for taller, more experienced people, increasing its height and decareasing its catching area.

Camaro is a 3D model intended to be used in a video game. It is a fully detailed and textured model of the exterior and interior of the reference car.

The only request for the model was not to exceed 65.000 vertex for mesh.

Shaped is a stylized, practical packaging that keeps the product fresh thanks to its geometry. Winner of the10th place in the packaging contest of the company Herta. The contest was hosted in Jovoto's site.

Shaped is a stylized, practical packing that keeps the product fresh thanks to its geometry. This is possible as, when the packing is closed, it pushes out the oxygen inside it keeping the product isolated from the environment. Besides, there is a thin plastic sheet between each pair of slices of ham that prevents the user’s contact with the slices that won’t be removed.

Shaped works

thanks to its closing mechanism that has only one joint -placed in the back- between the top and lower parts. This mechanism allows the air to flow to the holes placed in the lower casing. Then, the packing is sealed by the protruding part of the top casing.

To push out as much oxygen as possible, both casings fit perfectly. This way, when the packing is full, the top casing fits the slices thanks to the material’s ability to lose its original shape, and the rigidity provided by its geometry.

The top casing’s rigidity is increased when closing thanks to the packing’s geometry. The curvature reduces the lever forces and keeps the oxygen from getting back in. It also gives the slices of ham an appetizing, attractive appearance and makes easier the extraction of the slices.

The packing is made up of three components:

Top: thermoformed transparent plastic, with a medium caliber that allows both rigidity and flexibility.

Lower: thermoformed dark plastic, with a medium caliber.

Sticker: it has the product’s graphic design.

Thanks to its particular geometry, Shaped stands out in the sales point, allows an easy opening and closing, improves the graphic design’s visibility and gives the product an unique character and a top-quality appearance as it keeps the ham fresh.

Haceb heating line design

The Haceb heating line was designed by the design team of which I took part while I was doing my internship, and was under the direction of the designer Luis Fernando Quintero.

The task consisted of the development of 3 different lines focused in the principal user segmentation of the company, which takes the following names: Arezzo, Assento and Appiani.

In each line we had to design all the elements , such as the range, knobs, grid, etc. The design was focused on the current trends and its possible manufacture.

The entire process started from the ideation and ended with a prototype and a printed catalogue.

Introductory video of the Crea project of Haceb company, in which some universities participate in a creative process of product design.

Scketch 1

The whole video, including the sound
edition, was made in Blender 2.55.

The work consisted on the creation of a new logo and an animation to motivate the students, using the new style of the company and project.

Scketch 2

The video is based on the design process starting in the sketch, passing through the modeling and prototyping, to finish with a product which is the main object that shows all the process.

For this reason, the letter “C” is the product, because it is the first and only thing with which the users interact. In this way, when reading the word “Crea”, you go from the product (letter “C”) to the sketch (letter “a”).

Soul Range

Range design made in my internship period at the company Haceb. It is based on the shapes of the automobile industry as an formal referent.

That way we intended to reflect in our design the changes in the aesthetic perceptions of the users.

The technique was based in the identification of different patterns in today's best sold cars, and the application of said patterns in a totally different product.

The principal concept is strength and resistance with a minimalist trend. According to this, in the final design prevail elements such as soft transitions and small details.

The initial concept is more emotional and tries to reflect as much as posible the referent. The design passed through different stages, such as an analysis of the engineering, marketing and its coherence with the formal language of the new product lines.

Spine is a kind of modular furniture that I proposed at the contest Spin n design of Rotoplast enterprise. Its concept is inspired in the living beings’ vertebra, to achieve a perfect adaptation to people’s position.

It is composed of 15 pieces that can be distributed when packaging, so the space is optimized and the used can easily assemble it.

The proposal of Bench with Information is a result of an analysis of the costumes and habits people have when they wait for services in places such as restaurants, cinemas, malls, banks, etc.

The bench is designed to be used by two people due to the couple effect (in a place where there are two people, no one else will want to seat), while in the center commercial information is placed, which can be some kind of publicity.

Personal Composter

Personal composter and a little garden built in recicled polypropylene.At the moment of designing, this is what I had in mind: an existing trend related to the home spaces reduction(almost nothing had a garden).

So this is one of the reasons why people don´t make

compost. Its operation is based the usage of worms located in the inside. You can use it on the ground or suspended. The flowers are the visual aspect of the product, so you can see what you plant.

I+D Headboard

Headboard is a concept that appears as an answer to the need of an adaptable, flexible design, and to the constant marketing changes, in shape and size.

It is designed to be produced and commercialized by Sena Madera (a national learning service), being this way an R&D project. It is composed of two main units and a main one. The last one is added (one or more) according to the bed’s length, being this way adaptable to the different standard bed lengths. The customizable decoration is given by the defined space to place pictures or posters. Another important characteristic of the headboard is its integration of functions as a desktop as it counts with accessories (such as near lights and outlets) that enhance the comfort for the user.

Zefiro

Zefiro is a personal transportation system designed for areas where it is not possible to build civil works, or for areas where fuels like gas or gasoline are difficult to get or transport. This is a very common situation in Colombian rural spaces.

This system allows the mobilization through a cable thanks to the transmission of strength and movement from the pedals to the pulley which are in contact with the cable.

The mechanism can be manually dismounted to be relocated and allow its operation in the opposite direction.

Toy Design For Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototype printed in a machine FDM Dimension 1200es Series. The modelation was made in Blender and Rhinoceros with the aim to develop some Boolean operations, and then, to achieve a closed mesh in *.stl.

Some problems were solved by using Rapid Work software.

The modelation consists of almost 2 million sides and 700 vertexes to achieve a high definition in the printing. The harlequin is inspired in a character of the series Chorno Cross called Harle.

Its general dimensions are 100mm x 100mm x 75mm, and the printing took about 10 hours.

Alfa Romeo 230 Monza

This is a preview render of a model; I made it in order to see how it was looking and to correct any problem, but I closed Blender, and then reopened it, and surprisingly the file was damaged!
So I had to correct the noise and sharpen the image in Photoshop, and try not to lose the work. For this reason, some of the textures were erased, and it really doesen’t look the way I wanted…But I’m not going to model it all over again
